When Is the Right Time to Start Therapy?

The truth? There’s no perfect time to start therapy.

It’s one of those things that’s easy to put off. We tell ourselves we’ll start when things slow down, when we’re “really” struggling, or when life gets a little less messy. But the reality is, therapy isn’t about finding the right time—it’s about finding the right fit.

The relationship you build with your therapist matters. You should feel safe, comfortable, and most importantly, not judged. Therapy is your space—a place to untangle your thoughts, speak freely, and sort through whatever life is throwing your way. Sometimes, you’ll talk your way to a solution on your own. Other times, your therapist will gently guide you in the direction you need.

I like to think of therapy as coming in seasons. There might be a moment when life throws you a major curveball—something so big it doesn’t even feel like your life fits you anymore. In those times, weekly therapy might be essential. You work through it, you grow, and eventually, you find your rhythm again. And maybe then, therapy takes a backseat for a while.

But here’s the thing: life has a way of lifing. Just when you get comfortable, something unexpected shows up. And when you’ve already done the work—built that therapeutic relationship—you don’t have to start from scratch. You can reach out with a quick message, and pick up where you left off.

So don’t wait for the “right” time. Start when you’re ready to find someone who feels like the right support. Therapy is always there, in whatever season you need it. Give me a call, text or email at 727-201-2984 or tonigorntherapy@gmail.com
